Work in progress: From The Street to The Stage
From the Street to The Stage is a dance project by Lazaro Godoy which seeks to break a new mould for the creative process and the relationship between artist and audience during that stage. The evolution of the piece occurs outside the studio in the live environment of the city. Rehearsals occur in bus stations, parks, playgrounds and the unpredictable settings encourage collaboration with a surprised public.
A powerful social exchange takes place; a dialogue through motion whereby the audience responds and contributes to the creation. Artists and audience draw near, reducing their fear of exposure and increasing their sensitivity to communication through dance. Critically, it is through these encounters that the dance itself progresses by providing alternative perspectives unavailable had it been explored in isolation. Concepts are tested through live dialogue, steering an uncertain course until finally emerging as a fully choreographed stage piece with unique depth and character reflecting the vibrant street process that formed it.
Inspiration
Lazaro began learning dance on the streets of rural Cuba in the unpredictable natural environment of street Rumba, break dance and teenage expression. Like much of life the dance was developed and performed in public, and it was this vibrant background of personal creativity exposed and tested by peers that attracted the prestigious dance academies and companies that later invited Lazaro to join.
Now a long time since Cuba, having spent many years traveling and working across the globe, Lazaro is finally feeling back home again. And with the return of these feelings comes a period of vibrant creativity as he dwells on the meaning of ‘home’, on his prior struggle with wandering and yearning, on his roots in Cuba and and what it is that he has now found in Israel. And of course, as part of this reflection Lazaro seeks a return to the old way of working; working from the street.
Seeking Support
From the Street to The Stage is a work currently in progress and seeking financial support. It is conceived and guided by Lazaro Godoy, an exceptional young talent with already a wealth of first class experience. A powerfully charismatic choreographer with a distinctive style and approach. From the Street to The Stage (a duet incorporting video art, film, sound and music) is sure to be something special throughout its development and outstanding when finally on stage.
However, without support from those with the means to assist and a nose for quality then the project will of course, struggle. If you would like be part of this project or are aware of organisations or individuals who might like to assist, then please do get in touch. A DVD is available with some of the project’s story so far.
Many thanks for your time and consideration.
